Chloe

Chloe came out of the shower and wrapped a towel around her body. She marched over to her closet and looked inside for something to wear. She needed an outfit that portrayed sweet and demure—and totally incapable of running down a police officer.

The only problem was that her clothing purchases for the last couple of years were designed to make her look more like Kim Kardashian rather than Marie Osmond.

She finally decided upon a pink dress with white polka dots and tossed it on her bed.

She had to figure out a way to make her long blond hair, including the extensions, display innocence. Maybe a hairband?

There was a knock at her bedroom door.

“Come in,” she said.

It was her mother. “Your father has called a lawyer who will meet us downtown. They set the appointment for two this afternoon.”

“How’s Daddy feeling?”

“He passed the kidney stone earlier this morning, but he’s still a bit groggy from all the meds they gave him.” She smiled. “I think this stolen car business has energized him. He’s taking a shower now.”

“Why do we have to go downtown? Why can’t we drive to the police station in Northridge?”

Her mother’s face got a pinched expression. “A policeman was killed—apparently by your car. They want us at their headquarters. So, we’ll do as they ask.” She looked at the sundress lying on the bed. “Is that what you’re planning to wear?”

“What’s wrong with it?”

“It’s too revealing. Find a sweater or wrap so you can cover your décolletage.”

She rolled her eyes. “Fine.”

Her mother’s expression softened, and she ventured into Chloe’s room. “Honey, I’m not sure you understand how serious this situation is. Even though someone stole your car, the policeman’s family might come after us somehow. Especially once it gets out your father is a prominent film director—and be assured it will get out.”

Chloe was scared. She felt the color drain from her face and got lightheaded. “I think I’m going to faint.”

Her mother pushed her to sit on the bed. “Put your head between your knees and take deep breaths.” She rubbed her back, and for the first time in a long while, she was glad to have her mom near.

The mood was broken when her father shuffled into the room. “What’s wrong with her? Is she all right?”

“She’s a little lightheaded,” her mother said. “I’m sure it’s just the stress of the situation.”

Chloe sat upright and scrutinized her dad. He looked normal to her.

He smiled at her. “I talked to the attorney. You two will drive to the precinct in Northridge, and they’ll have a police unit drive you to their headquarters in LA. Be at the Devonshire Station no later than 12:30.”

“Okay. You’re not going?”

He shook his head. “No. I’m not up to it. In fact, I’m going to go lay down again.”

The sense of calm she’d regained disappeared. “I have to ride in a cop car? Are they going to handcuff me?”

“Don’t be silly,” her mom said. “They’re doing it as a courtesy because you’re a victim.
